Our breast surgeons are at the forefront of new surgical methods and technology, including sentinel lymph node biopsies, oncoplastic breast surgery, and breast-conserving techniques.

Our Approach

Our breast surgeons perform several types of breast surgeries, depending on the location of the tumor, stage of cancer and other factors. Our surgeons also perform preventative (prophylactic) mastectomies for selected patients who are at high risk for hereditary breast cancer.

Successful patient outcomes are absolutely dependent on the experience and expertise of the surgical team performing the initial surgery and breast reconstruction. Our multidisciplinary team is consistently at the forefront of emerging technologies and methods, often developing new methods which are then adopted as a standard of care.

The main surgical options we offer include:
  • Lumpectomy/breast conserving surgery which removes only the cancerous tumor and surrounding tissue.
  • Sentinel lymph node biopsy or axillary lymph node dissection which identifies and removes lymph nodes that contain breast cancer.
  • Mastectomy (including skin-sparing, nipple-sparing) which removes the entire breast and breast tissue.
  • Reconstructive surgery (immediate, staged and delayed breast reconstruction) which rebuilds the breast shape through the use of breast implants, tissue flaps or a new procedure called fat grafting, in which fat tissue is taken from other parts of the body and reconstructed in the breast.

Your physician will determine which surgery is best for you, depending on the size and location of the tumor, the stage of the cancer and whether the lymph nodes are affected. He or she also will consider your age and overall health. Our plastic surgeons work closely with our surgical oncologists to determine the best path for initial surgery, reconstruction, while also taking into consideration the larger breast cancer treatment plan.
