Concussion Evaluation and Management

A severe fall or a blow to the head severe enough to shake or injure the brain can result in a concussion. In some cases, you may lose consciousness. Depending on the severity, recovery can take from a few hours up to a few days or more.

Symptoms of concussion may include headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and difficulty concentrating or remembering. The concussion may be serious if your symptoms worsen or if additional symptoms like blurred vision or convulsions occur. Most concussions are mild, and people recover fully. However, any brain injury from a concussion must heal properly before you put yourself at risk of another.

Our Approach

At M Health Fairview, patients receive concussion care from a multi-specialty team. Our medical specialists are from disciplines that include trauma, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, emergency medicine, and neurology. We work together with physical, occupational and speech therapists to help patients through the concussion treatment and recovery process.

As part of our concussion evaluation and management, providers review symptoms and conduct a neurological exam. They check balance, reflexes, coordination, vision, hearing, strength, memory and ability to concentrate. Providers can then assess the severity of symptoms and recommend whether the patient can be monitored at home or if hospitalization is needed.

We then work with patients to create a treatment program individualized to each injury and specific symptoms, and we seek input from therapists and other team members to help speed recovery.

Conditions We Treat

Concussion evaluation and management is indicated for both sports-related and non-sports-related concussions, traumatic brain injuries and other conditions. Post-concussion syndrome may include headaches, nausea, sensitivity to light and noise, balance and dizziness problems, inability to concentrate or focus and mood swings.
